Preparing for the Next Level

Proactive leaders don't wait for opportunity. They build the capabilities, executive presence, and visibility to be ready when it arrives.

The Proactive Approach to Advancement

Some leaders wait for their organization to tell them they're ready for the next level. Others get ahead of it. They understand that advancement isn't just about performance in the current role — it's about demonstrating the capabilities, executive presence, and leadership visibility required for the role they aspire to. They're intentional about how they position themselves, what they're known for, and how they're perceived by the people who matter.

This requires clarity about the path forward. What is the next logical step? What does a leader in that role need to demonstrate? What are the gaps between where they are now and what they need to be in that role? What experiences, relationships, and capabilities would make them the obvious choice when opportunity arrives? What's their positioning story — what are they building toward, why does it matter, what value would they bring?

The leaders who succeed in advancement build the answer to these questions deliberately. They identify and pursue stretch assignments that develop the capabilities they'll need. They build visibility and relationships across the organization. They work on their executive presence and credibility. They position themselves strategically in conversations and forums where future decision-makers are watching. And they do it in a way that feels authentic, not calculated.

How We Help Leaders Prepare Strategically

We help high-potential leaders get intentional about their path to the next level. We start by helping them clarify what success looks like — what is the role they're aspiring toward, what does a credible candidate for that role look like, what would they need to demonstrate to be undeniable for it. We then conduct a candid assessment of where they are now — how do executives and peers perceive them, what are they known for, what are the gaps between their current positioning and what they need to project for the next role.

From there, we develop a strategic advancement plan. We work on capability development — identifying the skills, perspectives, and experiences they need to build, and creating a pathway to develop them. We focus heavily on executive presence — how they show up in meetings, how they speak about complex topics, how they ask questions, what they prioritize in conversation, the way they move through the organization. We help them strategically build relationships with influencers and decision-makers, and we work on their positioning story — how they talk about their work and their aspirations in ways that feel authentic and compelling.

We coach them on being visible in the right ways — not self-promoting, but having their work, their thinking, and their leadership be known to the people who matter. By the time opportunity arrives, they're not hoping they'll be considered. They're the obvious choice. And they're genuinely prepared to step into the role and succeed.
